Chapter 4
Social Proof
We imitate the behavior of the majority in uncertain situations, assuming the crowd must know best — even when the crowd is wrong.
Examples
- We choose the packed restaurant over the empty one, assuming the crowd knows the food is better.
- Canned laughter on TV makes us laugh more, even when the jokes aren't funny.
- During stock market bubbles, investors pile in because everyone else is — the crowd's behavior overrides individual judgment.
