Effort Justification
We value outcomes more when we have worked hard to achieve them — regardless of their actual quality. Suffering creates attachment.

- Fraternity hazing rituals: the more painful the initiation, the more fiercely members value the group afterward.
- The IKEA effect: furniture you assembled yourself is valued higher than identical pre-assembled furniture — the effort creates ownership.
- Difficult religious rites and physically demanding spiritual practices produce more devoted believers than easy ones — the cost justifies the commitment.
