Contrast Effect
We don't judge things in absolute terms — we judge them relative to what surrounds them. Context systematically distorts our perception of quality and value.
Examples
- A $200 shirt seems cheap right after viewing a $500 suit in the same store.
- A mediocre job offer seems great immediately after a terrible one.
- An average-looking person seems more or less attractive depending entirely on who they are standing next to.
