Confirmation Bias (Part 2)
Even when we actively seek disconfirming evidence, we tend to ask questions in ways that only produce confirming answers — and we fail to 'murder' our own pet theories.
Examples
- If you ask 'Is this person sociable?' and observe them, you'll notice sociable moments far more than unsociable ones.
- Scientists unconsciously design experiments that favor their hypothesis, and journals preferentially publish confirming results.
- Charles Darwin forced himself to write down every piece of evidence that contradicted his theories immediately — knowing his mind would otherwise quietly discard it.
